The Story
In 1912, nestled on the tranquil shores of Lake Idlewild in northern Michigan, a unique and special place was born. Idlewild, affectionately known as ‘Black Eden’ became a sanctuary for African Americans, who brought the vibrant culture, music, and traditions with them.
Despite the era's harsh realities of segregation, Black Eden thrived, becoming the largest historic resort for African Americans in the US. Families and musicians from across the Midwest, South, and East Coast came in the thousands to celebrate, connect, and savor the freedom, camaraderie, and relaxation that Idlewild offered.
After World War II, Idlewild evolved into a vibrant entertainment hub, offering a stage for minority artists who were denied opportunities elsewhere. It became a cherished stop on the famed "Chitlin Circuit," where black performers could showcase their musical, comedic, or dancing talent.
Amidst the glittering lights of the Paradise and Flamingo nightclubs, musical legends like B.B. King, Della Reese, Aretha Franklin, Etta James, Louis Armstrong, Count Basie and more captivated audiences. By the 1960s, Idlewild had become a thriving community with over 300 black-owned businesses and thousands of families and vacationers from all over America.

The Vision
Born and bred in Detroit, Motor City, Michigan, childhood friends, John Joubert and Jason Ross and their wives, Wanda and Kenyatta, had a vision.
They wanted to bring to life, commemorate and honor the history and the legends of Idlewild, the town that segregation built. Known as ‘Black Eden’, Idlewild in Michigan was a haven for African Americans from 1912 to the late 1960's. It was this unique historically significant story that led the close friends to launch the Black Eden range of premium wines and spirits under a brand that reminds us of the importance of family, community, and legacy.
Offering exceptional tastes at an exceptional price, Black Eden 1912 wines and spirits embody the bold beauty and bravery of our people,
